November Newsletter by Pat Prather

Coordinators and Administrators

October 29th, the day after the CAWS Fall forum in Sacramento, Bob Poole from IBA, Board President Robin Oliver, Board Representatives Michael Winsatt and Dot Battenfeld, Capitol Advisors Lobbyist Group, and I met with several CA state legislators. We were well received, and these visits help us build relationships with key lawmakers and promote policies that increase the reputation and awareness of the International Baccalaureate in California.

We were unable to meet with the California Department of Education representatives because of schedule conflicts but Bob Poole is scheduling another meeting in December.

Help us to publicize the merits of the IB Programme by meeting with administrators at your local university campuses, and establishing relationships with your legislators! Having others see your students and teachers in action is the best way to showcase what it means to be a student in an IB classroom.

CAWS SPRING SEMINAR FEBRUARY 3, 2014 – REGISTER ONLINE NOW

DR. DAVID WEBER – KEYNOTE SPEAKER
HORTON GRAND HOTEL – SAN DIEGO

Dr. Weber, an MYP Specialist and workshop leader, will speak on “Concept-based Teaching and Learning”. More flexible approaches to learning generally will be hugely important topics in education over the next few years. Concept-based education focuses on big ideas, on helping students to understand why something is important, and how to connect ideas across disciplines. This has always been a major part of the PYP Programme, and Dr. Weber will show how it is being strengthened and implemented in the DP, MYP, and IBCC Programmes as well. There will also be a much greater focus on how students learn with Approaches to Learning adopted as a key component in all four programmes. The breakout sessions will concentrate on this particular element of Concept-based education. You can view the day’s agenda which is posted on the website.

Come meet and greet your colleagues and enjoy the Gas lamp District in San Diego!
