December 2008 Newsletter

Coordinators and Administrators

A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL!

The year 2008 is coming to a close and on behalf of the CAWS Board of Directors, I want to extend to you all our best wishes for a happy holiday season. This past year has presented us with so much change and challenge befitting my final comments on the last newsletter "out with the old and in with the new". Although there is some nostalgia for the old CIBO and its traditions, we need to keep moving forward welcoming growth, exploring new ideas, and taking risks. Dynamic organizations embrace these concepts as must we. So let's view 2009 as the year to continue to develop and grow as an organization and establish ourselves as leaders in the Associations of IB World Schools.
CONFERENCES
Orientation Seminar - February 20-21
Spring Conference - February 22-23

Both of these events take place at the Sheraton Suites at Symphony Hall in San Diego. Both are detailed thoroughly regarding conference details and hotel particulars on the C-ibo website under upcoming events. The Orientation Seminar is for schools interested in obtaining information about the IB Programme to see if it is something their school or district would like to explore further. If you know of a school or district in this situation, encourage them to register for this seminar. It will be very helpful to them. The spring conference features Kari Grady Grossman, author of the book Bones That Float, her story about adopting a Cambodian boy and then founding a school in Cambodia. Her presentation addresses our theme of Access and Equity – Closing the Achievement Gap. Read her book and then come and share your ideas about making a difference. You don't want to miss this experience.
IB FAN PAGE ON FACEBOOK
Alissa Appel works on social media for the IB and wants to get CAWS more involved. In her words "I hope that members of your community will join as a fan and be able to connect to other IB members. Additionally I would love to feature your schools on the Facebook page. Do you have any content such as photos or video that you can share?" This is perfect timing because one of my goals for 2009 is to feature one of our schools each month on the website and in my newsletter. Please let me know if you would like me to feature your school so that I can start this project in January.

The link to IB Fan Page on Facebook is listed below. This sounds like a great opportunity to connect with other IB schools and feature CAWS at the same time.

ISTA (International Schools Theatre Association)
Give your Theatre Arts teachers the incredible opportunity to attend the TAPS workshop sponsored by the International Schools Theatre Association partnering with Mo'o lelo Performing Arts Company in San Diego. The dates are October 15-17, 2009. Seema Sueko, Artistic Director of Mo'o lelo and Kiyoko Sims from the Childrens Theatre Company in Minneapolis will teach the master classes. Come and greet Sally Robertson from Cornwall UK, the Chief Executive Director of ISTA, who is excited to be able to come to San Diego to meet with our teachers. More details on the development of this workshop in the next newsletter.
LEGISLATION
Shortly on our website there will be a new section on the information page labeled Legislation and a link to the latest articles regarding state funding for schools. CAWS legislative consultant, Pam Bachilla provides us with this service which helps keep us informed on the latest happenings in Sacramento. When you read this latest article, it would be very helpful if you could connect with those legislators in your area who might be of help to us in this rather bleak time. It is remarkable how much can be done at the local level.
ROUNDTABLES
Unfortunately our first Diploma roundtable this year up north in Santa Rosa on November 15th hosted by Dot Battenfeld from Montgomery High School was cancelled because of lackluster registrations. Dot may reschedule the first of the year. Stay tuned!

Our second Diploma roundtable down south is planned for March 14th in Vista. The Coordinators are working out the arrangements and as soon as these are finalized, I’ll detail them in the next newsletter and have them posted on the website.
NEW IN 2009!
We have another great addition to the roundtables already listed on the CAWS calendar on the website. On January 12th Steve Gasca from Chino Valley Unified School District is hosting a roundtable for PYP teachers in Chino. On the website are posted all of the details of the conference including the registration form which you need to download, fill out and send to him. This is a real opportunity for PYP teachers to come together to share best practices and learn more about the delivery of the PYP. Join your colleagues for a great learning experience.
SEMINARS ON SCIENCE
A reminder - The American Museum of Natural History in NY is sponsoring online Professional Teacher Development by offering Seminars on Science, a course which is recognized by the IB. Check our website for details and how to register
TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOPS
This week we finally reached agreement and signed the contract with Granlibakken Lodge and Conference Center in Lake Tahoe to stage an MYP/PYP Level 1 and Level 2 teacher training workshop August 14-17, 2009. This is an exciting event because we have waited so long for NY to authorize us to offer this workshop. The MYP and PYP programmes are growing in California and elsewhere and it is gratifying to be able to provide much needed training to teachers and administrators. Work will begin immediately with Granlibakken to set up the registration and housing details. I’ll keep you informed as plans proceed.

The annual Diploma teacher training workshops will take place in Granlibakken, June 26-30, 2009. Online registration forms and lodging are posted on the website including the flyer for you to download. Registration began November 3, 2008. Teachers come from all over the world to attend these classes and they fill up rather quickly, so be sure to register your teachers as soon as possible.
FINALLY
Enjoy your holidays with family and friends and I wish you a New Year of health, happiness and prosperity.

Best regards,
Pat Prather – Executive Director
